(This post was supposed to be yesterday's post. Or the day before's. + today's since I am lazy)

Best song ever. I agree with you Boon Choon :). Meaningful, catchy and rocks balls. :)

(Then after F1)

Omg Cinammon Rolls and Hot Chocolate at Starbucks are <3! Coffee at night is crazy look at Beck who didn't sleep a wink because he is a dumdum who drank too much for his own good. F1 is just .. noisy. I went for qualifiers anyway not much to see, less chance of crashes and fires and BOOMZ whatnot. Finals were sad (this is totally not chronological anymore) Hamilton accident. Sad. Watched Daughtry live before F1 qualifiers, he was good live but the crowd wasn't that into him like Singaporeans were at the Paramore concert. His songs are nice too though I only knew 'No Surprise' by him. Reminds me of Nickelback, which I only liked some 'If today was your last day' or something song. Good song.

And I didn't win a single game of mahjong today. How sad. Oh I didn't get to play Fifa '10 against Mk either. How sad. No more games until after EoY for me. How sad. We smashed half the cake into Rayner's face. How sad. The house was so noisy we couldn't hear the music. How sad. I feel sick after eating too many simosas. How sad. I still have my 'Tiancheng pimple'. How sad. I am getting bitten by lots of mosquitoes these few days. How sad. (Mk said if they bite me a lot that means my blood is really sweet is that bad? D:) My elbow/shoulder/wrist feels detached half the time and I feel really beat up yet I am still awake because I am stopping all games after midnight. How sad. I like how the previous previous sentence was so long. How sad.

Good night people. How sad (I'm going to sleep).

My facebook is the most active in a long long long long long long loooooooong while. How sad.

I need to mug today Rayner's party tomorrow..

But I'm going F1 tonight -.- This is a sad life.

My third essay! Yay me although I think the ending sucks big time O:

Men are more disadvantaged than women in today’s world. Do you agree?

For the longest time in societies all around the world, men have been labeled the breadwinners while females the caretakers of the family. Women who are career-oriented are seen as “superwomen” in our society while househusbands are looked down upon and deemed as “failures”. However, who is to say that men are unable to stay home and take care of children while the women rake in the money? It is easy to say that history has shown many cases of compromising of women’s rights – trafficking of young girls and women, burning them alive, etc. however, in current day’s world, men are more disadvantaged than women. This can be shown through implemented laws and the pay disparity which I will go on to explain later.

Women may be denied higher ranking jobs or political positions because of the masculine stereotype that men would necessarily do the job better. This is very explicitly shown with the number of male politicians compared to female politicians and that 90% out of the world’s self-made billionaires are males. Females are usually seen as the ‘sacrifice’ in the family who has to stay at home and take care of children, and juggling both family and work is not an easy task. Furthermore, pregnant women or women who have been given birth have problems looking for potential employers as they would be able to claim more healthcare benefits from the company.

However, this trend is slowly dying. In Singapore, where meritocracy is a value, females who are hardworking workers are able to obtain higher ranking positions. Some examples include the CEO of Pepsi, and the CEO of Yahoo! who are both females. In fact, the pay disparity between sexes is very alarming. Contrary to popular belief, a survey done in New York revealed that women aging from 21 to 30 years regardless of education levels working full time make 117 percent of what the men earn. This shows that the stereotype that women are unable to work just as well as men is does not really hold true in our current society.

Legally speaking, there are many laws that protect women’s interest but nearly none for the converse. For example rape laws are biased towards women by preventing men from challenging their accusers; and when it is the men who are raped by women, the women are convicted less frequently and given lighter sentences. Also, mothers have a higher chance of winning custody of the children even if the father would be able to take care of children just as well. Judges are awarding more alimony to women but for the other way around, men are not entitled to alimony. Laws are generally biased in favour of females, and this disadvantages men in society.

Even more so, Singaporean males have to serve National Service after their tertiary education, while females are not obligated to do so. This causes men to forfeit two years of their lives which could be spent pursuing further educations or gaining experience in the working world, thus losing out to their women counterparts.

Evidently, men in today’s society are more disadvantaged than women. Women are protected very much by law and have proven to be as capable as men in terms of efficiency and skills. In order to achieve gender equality, we must first start from breaking away the stereotypes given to men and women.

Should students in Singapore be made to learn a third language?

Singapore is one of the world’s most technologically advanced countries, though it suffers from a pretty serious drawback, the lack of natural resources. Therefore, Singapore has to maximise usage of manpower. To do that, learning new languages is the key to expanding to overseas markets. Why do I say so? Language is used as a tool of communication and a means to express feelings to one another. Thus, one can see the importance of language in this current day and age. Knowing an extra language would benefit us in many ways, it would broaden our perspectives as we would understand other cultures, we would be able to make closer friends of different tongues around the world and also it would improve your chances of employment or education opportunities. In my opinion, if, for example you would dedicate your time into learning languages of your overseas business partners, they would feel your sincerity and be more willing to work with you. It is always more useful to know an extra language, therefore I feel students in Singapore should be made to learn a third language.

As earlier stated, knowing a third language would bring about many benefits. Rather than just being monolingual or bilingual (in Singaporean context), the ability to communicate well with other people from other countries is very important, and it is especially so, now that globalisation is picking up its pace. As the world becomes more and more inter-connected, knowing an extra language would allow students to understand other cultures better. It would be easier for them to communicate, negotiate and co-operate with people around the world, as well as bestowing them a better chance with employment and further education opportunities. In a multi-cultural society like Singapore, with everyone knowing another language, it would add to the cultural diversity in Singapore.

Also, learning another language does not necessarily seek to help us only through superficial means such as employment and further education opportunities. Learning another language is not just a skill, it could also seek to enrich us in many ways like by help students appreciate different art forms like serial dramas, dance, music, etc. Furthermore, most literary works are not written in English and translations often cause a loss or a change in meaning.

However, many may argue that adding an extra subject to Singapore’s education syllabus would be too stressful for the students. Singapore’s education system works like a social stratification where only the cream of the crop, the top 10% academically are given a chance to pursue a third language, Japanese, French or German, as a subject. This is justified by the rest of the students, who might be unable to cope with their core subjects, like Math and Science, and yet are coerced into learning an extra language that may not be useful to them if they do not plan to expand overseas. I personally feel that learning an extra language however would be more useful in one’s life than some other subjects.

Knowing an extra language is more practical and useful in the current day’s dog-eat-dog society. Whatever the language, it ensures a better chance for students’ applications to overseas universities and after they have joined the working force, it allows them opportunities to work overseas while meeting many people and making new friends. I am sure that stress is not a problem and students can work around an extra language subject. With that, I conclude that students in Singapore should be made to learn a third language.

Essay

Explain the significance of language in today's society and the need for a common language.

Language in today's society plays many important roles. Other than being a tool for communicating ideas and information with others, it is also used for expressing feelings and emotions towards others. Language is even part of someone’s identity and integral in what defines a person. However, in this day and age, is there really a need for a universal language? Although it is true a universal language would definitely bring about economic benefits, this would ultimately lead to extinction of minor languages. This would ultimately lead to a loss of cultural diversity and as such, I disagree to a need for an internationally spoken language.

In retrospect, there have been attempts to develop a universal language - the Esperanto language. This language was created with many similarities to other European languages with the purpose of creating a universal lingua franca. However, Esperanto is hardly used in current society, and there are many possible reasons. The most striking of the reasons is because it is impractical to teach the whole world a language. It would be very expensive to do so and the poorer people living in rural areas who are unable to afford education would lose out. There would even be many who would protest with this notion as minor languages which are on the brink of dying out would be compromised further. It is still not plausible to introduce a universal language to the world, therefore the bilingual education system in Singapore, so as to maximise the business markets Singaporeans can venture into.

However, having a common language does not require you to give up your mother tongue. This means that a universal language might not definitely lead to extinction of other languages, and since there is good use for it; better communication globally, a universal language should be adopted. As a matter of fact, constant usage of two languages in a bilingual community like Singapore has brought about Singlish, a very colloquial form of English used by Singaporeans with words originating from Malay and Chinese dialects; this universal language might contribute culturally to other countries and languages as well.

Following that, what would the criterion to what this universal language be? English would arguably be the best choice as more and more people in the world speak and are taught English. This is because English is the current lingua franca for international business, science and technology. In fact, more than 50% of all scientific entries are in English. However, is this criterion enough to decide which language should be the internationally used language? Most people in the world speak Mandarin Chinese yet why is it not considered? It is simply not possible to pick an existing to be used as a universal language without garnering any disapproval. Minorities would think they are being picked upon and there would be even more racial disputes in the world.

In conclusion, an internationally spoken language would only bring about unhappiness in majority of the people (less than half the world speak the most spoken language in the world, Mandarin Chinese) as they would be forced to learn a new language that they are unfamiliar with which might lead to eradication of their own mother tongues. Even though hypothetically having a universal language would lead to many economic benefits, cultural diversity must not be sacrificed for such a purpose. There is no need for a common language in today’s society.
